Does Yoga Help You Lose Weight?
Yoga workouts and poses can certainly be put to good use for taking off excess pounds. But, does Yoga help you lose weight?
The basic tenets of Yoga promotes a healthy lifestyle and when combined with a calorie reduction can help to speed up your weight loss.
It will increase your metabolism by increasing the caloric burning process. All weight loss is based on using more calories than you take in. Including a Yoga for weight loss routine in your schedule will also allow you to increase your ability to concentrate and focus.
Your thyroid regulates your metabolism and is responsible for the chemical processes that transform food into energy.
Can you lose weight with yoga?
Since Yoga uses a series of twisting poses that will help to stimulate the work flow of the internal organs. This will cause your metabolism to increase and burn more calories which will eventually cause you to have a lower body weight. Another side effect is that it will help to improve your circulation and increase your energy level.
The various back bends combined with the forward bends will help to stimulate the metabolism. The poses that affect the neck region can be helpful in stimulating the thyroid if the weight problem is caused by a hormonal imbalance.
Poses that will help the most for this include the camel, rabbit, plow, bridge and head stand. Going quickly between the various poses can help to accelerate the weight loss.
Beware though that those seriously overweight may find some of these poses extremely difficult and should start slowly with the easier poses and add others as they become more confident in the easier ones.
You can use standing poses to increase muscle strengthening such as the warrior pose. These will help to create higher endurance and increase your caloric usage. And if you want to employ more strenuous routines like hot yoga calories burned will increase dramatically.
Does Yoga Help You Lose Weight?
Remember that a gradual approach is best with all Yoga practices. The long term effects on your yoga weight loss regime will become evident and even more so the inner peace and general well feeling that Yoga will promote within you.Another study definitively shows that Yoga can help with weight control and weight loss.
This study was held by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, and involved 15,500 healthy, middle-aged, men and women. This is an age group that typically has great difficulty with losing weight. Because the number of calories needed to function declines, and the energy levels needed to burn off those calories is simply not what it used to be when they were younger.
In this study, the Yoga for weight loss practice was defined as practicing at least 30 minutes once a week for four or more years. Comparatively speaking, this is truly a bare minimum. Many Yoga teachers will say that this amount of Yoga will do nothing.
Regarding this study, Alan R. Kristal, Dr.P.H., the study’s lead author at Hutchinson Center’s Public Health Sciences Division said, “Men and women who were of normal weight at age 45, and who regularly practiced Yoga, gained about three fewer pounds during that 10-year period than those who didn’t practice Yoga.”
Until all the studies are in, it would be safe to say that adding Yoga practice to your weekly routine, and eating wisely, will contribute to weight control or weight loss. Although Yoga is a very ancient practice which has been keeping people fit for approximately 5,000 years, its many health benefits are still a mystery that are worthy of more formal studies.
“Yoga is a phenomenal way to put you in touch with your body the way nothing else can, and yes, it can help you lose weight,” says instructor Dana Edison, director of Radius Yoga in North Redding, Mass., and a certified personal trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine.
Celebrity yoga trainers Ana Brett and Ravi Singh, who have worked with such hotties as Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, also believe in yoga’s weight-loss powers.
“We have seen it in ourselves, we have seen it in our clients – yoga can give you a real workout even if you are a beginner,” says Brett, who, with Singh, created the best-selling DVD program Fat Free Yoga. via webmd.com
