Holistic Detox: When you first hear about a holistic detoxification diet or cleanse, you possibly imagine that it would be quite an unpleasant process, and to be honest – for some people it can be difficult.
The celebrities detox cleanse diets seem to always be in the news, constantly coming up with something new and exotic sounding – and often dangerous! But the truth is simple, detoxing is important. And in the world we live in today – it is more important than ever if you want to enjoy a long and healthy life.
My personal experience with holistic detox and health started in the early 1990’s when I was first introduced to the Hippocrates Diet and Health program, which totally changed my life. From there I started a journey into all things “natural”.
I juiced, I grew wheatgrass, I made our own sour dough bread, I did fasts and colon cleanses, I started Yoga, I meditated and did manifestation, I sprouted like crazy, I did NLP, EFT, self hypnosis, Silva Mind Method (which I UNEQUIVOCALLY HIGHLY recommend!)… … I even went as far as having a water birth at home in the living room. Now, that was fun 🙂
It has been a journey and a half, and I intend to share some of my experiences here with you – some of them I am sure you will find totally hilarious. Like when my mother and I were in the middle of a Hulda Clarke liver cleanse and decided we needed to go for a drive. Ah, memories …
Anyway, hopefully you will find the inspiration and empowerment to start your own journey into a more natural way of life – or at least just dip in your big toe for a taste!
Holistic Detox – Why Should We Do It?
Detoxing regularly is something that is becoming evermore important as our world is increasingly filled with toxic substances.
Even the quality of our most basic and essential foods is getting poorer and poorer, even as technology advances at a mind-blowing pace.
Once you get to understand a little more about the whole detox concept and how it actually works towards great health benefits, you will likely develop a keen interest in the process and the results.
Your digestive system is the catch all for all of the toxins that you take into your body. Even if you are a healthy person who does not smoke, does not drink and eats only organic foods, you are still taking in toxins.
They are in the air that you breathe, the foods you consume, the water that you drink, in the fabric of the clothes you wear, and … well, just about everywhere.
These toxins linger in the body, are stored away in our tissues and find their way to the digestive system. The digestive system is a vital system that you need to work optimally to be able to maintain good health. It is the basis of everything.
The digestive system is comprised of organs such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys and intestines. Foods usually enter the digestive system through the stomach and are then passed for processing through the digestive tract. Many foods and drinks that you take in cause the kidneys and pancreas work overtime in processing them.
All of the organs in the digestive system have a job to do in order to keep your body running healthy. Once food and drink is processed in the system, it is then eliminated by way of waste. Liquids are eliminated by urine and solid waste is eliminated through the intestines as feces.
In some cases, foods can end up getting stuck in the intestines. There are cases where people have had elements in their intestines for ten years or more! Check out the Inside Poop book! for a little enlightenment in this area.
In addition, the organs also take a thrashing when it comes to expelling toxic matter. Some food types, as well, can be very difficult for digestive organs to process. Simple carbohydrates, for example, are very hard on the kidneys and pancreas as well as the liver – because they tend to pass through quickly and make these organs work overtime.
Toxins in the air that you breathe enter your system via the circulatory system which conveys blood to and from the organs. When you smoke cigarettes, for example, the smoke is absorbed into your bloodstream and carried right throughout your body – and quickly too. This negatively affects the digestive system. Even second hand smoke will take its toll.
Skin is the Largest Detoxification organ
Our skin is by far the largest of all our detoxification organs. Whenever we take a bath or shower using chemicals that are present in the shampoo and soap, we are absorbing some of those toxic components toxins into our body via the skin.
If you do not have a natural rain water supply, your ‘town water” is treated with chemicals. These chemicals including chlorine are absorbed through the skin, whenever you take a shower or bath.
When we breath in air, we inhale toxins directly into our lungs, and on into our bloodstream. It is impossible to live a life that is completely free of toxins. In the modern world is simply inevitable that we will come into constant contact with toxins. Well, unless we could somehow live out our lives inside a sterile plastic bubble!
What Does A Holistic Detox Do?
Holistic detox works with your body, to make sure that your whole system – including you digestive system is healthy and working to it’s optimum capacity.
When your digestive system is in good working order, your whole body sings. If your digestive system is not healthy, then your whole body suffers. In order to have a healthy body, you must first start with a healthy and fully functional digestive system.
A good holistic detox will rest your digestive system, while at the same time providing your body with very high quality and easily absorbed nutrients, that will feed and nourish every last one of your cells.
The digestive process actually takes up a massive amount of energy, so by stopping the need for digestion and putting in top quality fuel, the body is then able to start performing a “spring-clean on itself”.
A good holistic detoxification concentrates on cleaning out the entire digestive system, usually by drinking a commercial or homemade detox drink that is made specifically to clear out the intestines and to give the digestive organs a real boost – for much improved function.
LOL, although it may sound like a surgical procedure, a healthy body detox simply involves drinking and then going to the bathroom.
An holistic detoxification clears the body of all of the toxins and foods that sit in the digestive system. Not only is it a good way to get the chemicals and poisons out of your body, but it also works fantastically for those who are looking to lose a little weight. Most people find that they can take off quite a few pounds very easily by doing a body detoxification.
Drinking a good homemade holistic detox drink could be likened to taking a barium enema, except that you do not have to drink as much and it sure as heck tastes a whole lot better! A barium enema completely clears out your intestines and is usually given to those who are having medical tests done on their colon or other digestive organs. This eliminates all of the waste from the body and makes you feel lighter. Not only can it get rid of toxins, but it can get rid of any waste that is lingering in your intestines.
An holistic detox is one of the first steps towards being a much healthier person, all round. You should also take proper precautions when it comes to your health and eat good, nourishing food, exercise regularly and avoid bad habits where you can. Look at an holistic detoxification as a way to enhance your health, help you lose weight and keep your digestive system healthy.
